No previous art experience is necessary and the student will learn basic collage methods of choosing a support, image size and transfer, color choices, collage techniques, composition, varnish and paper application. With lectures, demos, and handouts the student will complete a simple collage of a high heel while learning the basic techniques. (Guys are welcome so maybe a sneaker or a cowboy boots choice for you.)

Supply List:
Supply List:
1) Support:
One gallery wrapped canvas 12”x12”. The 1 ½” deep gallery wrap is a good depth as the paper can be wrapped around the edge and gives a good presentation without a frame.
2) Glue: Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish (fluid, liquid, acrylic) for the glue. (Army green and black label) (gloss not matt, not gel) Read the label.
3) Brush: approximately 1/2" synthetic brush, flat or filbert. (size 6 or 8) A cheaper one is better and let it be a designated glue brush.
4) Magazines. Bring in a few various types such as food magazines; fashion magazines have good glossy pages, science, car mags. (Vanity Fair, Bazaar, “W”, Elle, for example). Other ideas for a few pages or items: maps, wine labels, found materials, receipts, travel brochures, old books, newspapers, atlas, and dictionary, anything personal printed like a name, city, hobby, etc.
5) A small plastic container with a lid for the gloss medium.
6) A small container for water to keep the brush in during break times.
7) Reference of the subject. Nancy will provide a photo reference and the drawing for a 12” design but if the student wants to choose a different subject the student will provide the image and be responsible for the image transfer. Other subjects might include a bird, an animal, still life of fruit or bottle, and a food item such as a cupcake or a favorite beverage.
Nancy will be using a high heel for her demo and will work on it during the class showing the different techniques. The students may use a similar image to collage along with Nancy. Workshops can cause stress worrying about what to paint or collage and by knowing beforehand the reference will be provided, the student will be able to arrive ready to relax, learn and enjoy learning the process and then applying that knowledge to other collage paintings back in their own studio.
8) pencil, permanent black pen, medium point, scissors,
9).Optional art supplies: Regular art supplies for a workshop but not necessary: chalk, white charcoal, fingernail scissors, a ruler (sometimes helpful to tear paper along the edge) a rubber finger tip to flip through mags, tracing paper, wet ones to help get the medium off hands, paper towels, Murphy’s oil soap for brush clean up, masking tape, a signing pen, camera, a small sketchbook or paper to make a thumbnail for a possible color scheme. (Nancy will have carbon paper available for transfer of the image)
Be prepared to come and have fun while collaging with a group of new friends. Suggestion: Bring a smaller canvas 8x8 or 10x10, and an image for an additional collage if you think you will whip this out in record time. You never know.
